Merry Christmas, 2014 from The Swansons

Merry Christmas dear friends and family.  We hope your holidays are delightful, full of love, laughter, children, hope, peace, love and especially Jesus.  He is the one who is the center and the only real reason for Christmas.

Summer months were full of family, trips, canoeing, Idaho, and any other adventures we could come up with.  You can scroll back through the posts from the past year to see some of these trips.

Pete is still the principal at McNeil Canyon Elementary School.  He continues to serve in elder-ship at Christian Community Church.  Pete is longing for snow so he can ride his re-built snow-machine. He is down to only one old Subaru to keep running.  While waiting for snow, Pete spends Saturdays fishing for halibut and winter king salmon.

Lenore finished her Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in May from the University of Alaska Southeast.  She is still teaching at McNeil Canyon Elementary School.  She teaches P.E., Music, and 2nd grade and is so grateful to have a job she absolutely loves.  She especially likes the boss ;)   Lenore is on her 6th year of teaching high school Sunday School, and still sings and plays bass and piano on the worship team.  Lenore performed in Les Mis this fall (pictures below) with Claire.  Disciplining 3 young women and being mom and wife keep her busy.  She is looking forward to starting up her snow-machine and taking to the ski trails.

Karl is finishing up his college career at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in December.  He will graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Math.  He is already active duty in the Navy and will head to OCS (Officer Candidate School) in January.  The next few years will be spent in multiple training facilities as he prepares to serve on Nuclear Powered Submarines.  We are very excited for his future.

Kirsten is a Junior at Point Loma Nazarene University (Pete and Lenore's alma mater).  She has settled on a degree in Music Education and has been enjoying learning percussion, strings, piano and other instruments.   She sings in a jazz vocal ensemble, a choir, occasional special performances, but is happiest when singing with the jazz band.  She is the vocalist and travels with the band.  She has performances nearly every weekend.  She is also teaching a children's choir in LaJolla on Sundays. She worked very hard during the summer working two different jobs to try to help pay for her education.

Claire is a Junior in high school here in Homer.  She also participated in Les Mis.  She recently performed in All-State choir, sings regularly at church on the worship team, and helps lead the music for the high school youth group. She is still Nordic skiing on the high school team and plans to play soccer again in the Spring.  She has a 4.0 and is an excellent student, recently being inducted into the National Honor Society.  She is a great model of maturity and Christ-likeness to her friends and family.

We are so grateful that all our children love Jesus, have a personal relationship with Him and continue to be close to us as well.

We have been especially blessed to have our sister Britt living with us for a few months.  What a gift it has been to spend time and share our home with her.  She is working at the local hospital here in Homer and enjoying her new friends there.  She is also participating in the Beth Moore women's Bible study at church.
All of us here in Homer (and Fairbanks and San Diego) wish you a time of reflecting on Jesus Christ and His redeeming grace as He came to earth as a baby to eventually die on the cross for our sins.

November 2014

November brought some beautiful sunny days and cold nights.  Lenore is ready for the annual Lutefisk dinner at the Lutheran church.  A great night of cheer, Swedes, Norwegians, and fun.

Claire participated in Alaska All-State for the 2nd year.  What a joy to hear amazing music (choral, orchestra, and band) from our students.  The best of Alaska.
My sister Britt made me a special treat for my birthday.
Megan and Claire enjoyed a little time at the mall and ended up with matching coats, following the All-State performance.
Karl and Sami drove 7 hours to Anchorage for the concert, and then turned around in the same day and drove right back to Fairbanks.

Ready for the Scandinavian dinner!

October 2014

Celebrating at Fat Olives with Karl and Sami.
Megan made the most amazing birthday cake for Claire's birthday.
Les Mis photos.  Claire was a Revolutionary and Lenore was a factory woman (the one that gets in a fight with Fontine.

We dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Shrek for our Fall Carnival at McNeil Canyon Elementary School.

Claire with her girls for her birthday.
At the McNeil carnival with my bestie Kathy Beachy.
Claire was inducted into the National Honor Society.
Megan came along with Claire to Anchorage for moral support while having her wisdom teach removed.

September 2014

Autumn in Alaska is one of our favorite times.  We love going to the Swanson Lakes and canoeing without any bugs, tourists or people in general.  We took Auntie Britt with us on this adventure!

Water portage in a tiny stream ducking branches and rocks in the water.

Kate and Claire enjoying a little time in the trail just hanging out and loving each other.
Pete and Lenore at one of the canoe 'docks' on the lake portages.

Cross-fit strength comes in handy when needed.
Britt took a turn caring the canoe.
What an amazing and beautiful place we live here in Alaska.
Chai jumping right into morning devotions!
Red carpet day at McNeil found this principal in a tuxedo on recess duty!  The kids loved it!

Always bittersweet sending off this treasure to San Diego for another semester.  So proud of Kirsten.

Claire and her friend Megan learn how to check tires and add air when needed.
One of Kirsten's jobs this past summer was working here at the Inn.  She did a great job and made college money.
We went to the Alaska State Fair and had a quiet lunch on top of a eating area overlooking the fairgrounds.
Claire watched Pentatonix at the fair from a stand by the sound booth.
Les Mis flowers.

Karl and his girlfriend Sami came down for a visit.

 Every visit requires a haircut!
Sunday afternoon was so beautiful in Homer, we drove out to the Spit just simply to take in the beauty.

Britt in her new sweater!  Britt came to live with us in September.
Katelyn, Hannah and Grace kidnapped Claire and took her stargazing.
